Mafia Island Lodge 

Location: Mafia Island Lodge is situated in the center of the Marine Park, close to Utende hamlet on the southern coast of Mafia. It is a 30-minute by-light aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam and 45 minutes from Zanzibar Island and the Selous Game Reserve.

Accommodations: Nestled among coconut palms with a private veranda offering a view of Chole Bay, the lodge has 35 guest rooms, comprising 14 superior rooms, 18 standard rooms, and 2 family rooms. All of the self-contained rooms include air conditioning, twin and double beds with mosquito nets, en suite bathrooms, and living spaces in the two-family rooms.

Facilities and Services: The main lodge features a wide-open restaurant that serves a range of cuisine, including fish, seafood, and local delicacies, and a lounge area bar that creates a relaxed ambiance. Location: The sun rises over Zanzibar and sets behind the mainland lined with palm trees in Lazy Lagoon, which is situated in the Zanzibar Channel offshore from the old town of Bagamoyo on the mainland. It takes less than an hour to drive from Dar es Salaam to Lazy Lagoon. From there, it’s simply a quick boat ride across the tiny 2 km of sea to get to the island.

Accommodation: With a view of Chole Bay, Pole Pole’s seven bungalow apartments are seamlessly integrated into the tropical landscape around them. The rooms are equipped with antique and carved furniture that includes twin and double beds, as well as room for an additional bed. Every room features a private porch with a huge Zanzibari bed, chairs, a table, and an armchair. There are also two ceiling fans—one in the bedroom and one on the verandah—and an en suite bathroom. There are two “family” style bungalows, each having two rooms with a bathroom in between and a little private hallway.

Location: Less than 30 minutes by plane from Dar es Salaam and 15 minutes by car from Zanzibar, the Saadani Safari Lodge is situated in the center of Saadani National Park, with views of the Indian Ocean and the Zanzibar Channel. It is approximately 170 km north of Dar es Salaam, or 4 hours by car via Chalinze.

Accommodations: There are 15 cottages at the lodge, comprising 5 Maridadi Suites, 9 Classic Bandas, and 1 Siri Suite for “romantics” and honeymooners. The double or twin cottages have locally carved furniture, nets in the Zanzibari manner, and ceilings covered in large expanses of sail material. Every accommodation features a full-length veranda with unobstructed views of the sea, a daybed (double rooms) or a couch (twin rooms), an ensuite bathroom with a solar-heated shower, and a flush toilet.

Location: Just outside Saadani National Park on the northern border, with views of the Indian Ocean and Zanzibar Channel, is Simply Saadani Camp (Tent With A View). It takes about 4 ½ hours by car from Dar es Salaam via Chalinze and Mandera, and about 7 hours from Arusha. By Aircraft: flights into Saadani airfield from Dar es Salaam take less than 30 minutes, and flights from Zanzibar arrive in 15 minutes.

Accommodation: With nine tented bandas, three family suites, and three roomy suites, including the honeymoon suite “Venus,” which has its very own sunken bath nestled deep within the mangroves, the resort offers fifteen en suite rooms.
